Celtic failed with a loan move to sign Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher before the transfer window slammed shut.

The Bhoys wanted to add the 28-year-old to their ranks for their Scottish Premiership and Europa League campaigns, as they bid to retain their domestic crown and make progress in Europe.

The club's move for Fletcher was left very late though.

According to BBC Scotland, Celtic went in for Fletcher with just hours left in the transfer window on Tuesday evening; Scottish clubs had until midnight to make signings, while England's window closed at 6pm.

Fletcher was ready to join Celtic on a loan deal, but Sunderland blocked the switch, choosing to keep hold of the striker.

Sunderland paid £12m to sign Fletcher from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2012 and are keen to have him at their disposal as a striking option for the season ahead.

While Fletcher has appeared in all Sunderland's five games so far this season, he has only managed a single start as boss Dick Advocaat has preferred other options.
