Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata believes that David de Gea will be unaffected after his proposed transfer to Real Madrid unravelled on deadline day, adding that his Red Devils' team-mates and fans will be behind the goalkeeper.

De Gea was the subject of Real Madrid’s interest all through the summer, but Los Blancos’ last ditch effort to sign him on Spanish transfer deadline day came unstuck as the transfer documents were not submitted in time.

As a consequence, the Spaniard will stay at Old Trafford this season and could leave the Manchester giants for free next summer when his existing contract runs out.

Mata, who is on international duty with De Gea for Spain’s upcoming fixtures against Slovakia and Macedonia, feels that the custodian’s hunger and professionalism remain intact despite the situation on transfer deadline day.

And he expects the goalkeeper, who has not been fielded by Louis van Gaal at all this season, to thrive this term.

"He seems the same as ever to me, calm and relaxed.

"His personality will help him. He manages to play even better in moments of maximum pressure and stress. His personality will help him on and off the pitch.

"We all know what a great goalkeeper he is and he would make any team in the world better.

"The fans will get behind him and so will the team."
