David de Gea might be forced to sign a new contract with Manchester United to keep his 2016 European Championship dream alive.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper’s much anticipated move to the Bernabeu collapsed at the last hurdle after Real Madrid failed to file the necessary paperwork in time with the concerned authorities in Spain on Monday.

Manchester United have already indicated that they are ready to reintegrate him into the team by naming him in their Champions League squad.

However, the club are still keen to see him sign a new contract and according to Spanish daily AS, Louis van Gaal might use next summer’s European Championship as a carrot to force him to put pen to paper on a new deal.

It has been suggested that Manchester United have already made contact with agent Jorge Mendes and have indicated that Van Gaal would like to see De Gea back in his team, but wants him to sign a new contract before he comes back into the playing eleven.

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has said that if De Gea does not play too often this season then he would find it hard to find a place in the national team squad for next summer’s tournament in France.

De Gea is desperate to play in the big tournament and might be forced to sign a new long term deal with Manchester United to keep his dream alive.

A new contract would make Real Madrid’s job tougher as they were hoping to sign him on a free transfer next summer.
