Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is relishing playing in a new position for the Reds, saying that he is enjoying running up and down the wings in his role as a left-back.

Gomez has arrived at Anfield from Championship outfit Charlton Athletic and has found himself a place in manager Brendan Rodgers’ starting eleven, albeit one which is different from his role at his previous club.

The 18-year-old turned out for the Addicks at centre-back or as a right-back, but at the Merseyside giants he has been utilised as a left-back.

However, the youngster is relishing the new challenge and feels that the role is helping him add more facets to his game.

"At Charlton, I was playing at right-back so I suppose it’s similar but it is a bit different being on my weaker foot", he told the FA in an interview.

"But, it’s all helping me.”

Gomez, who has earned himself a place in the England Under-21 side, has added that he would eventually like to ply his trade as a central defender, however, he is relishing his current role with the Reds.

“I’d like to play centre-back eventually in the coming years, but it helps me positionally to play as a full-back.

"And I’m enjoying it, getting up and down the wing and it’s been good”, he concluded.
