Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has hit back at West Brom for making Saido Berahino’s transfer request public.

West Brom and Tottenham’s relationship over the last few days has become acrimonious over the Berahino transfer saga.

Tottenham slapped in four bids during the summer transfer window, two of which were on deadline day, for Berahino, but the Baggies remained firm and refused to sell the England Under-21 international.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has accused Spurs of unsettling the striker and the player himself has vowed that he is not going to appear for the Midlands club again.

The saga has hit a new low after the Tottenham chairman responded to Peace’s statement and said that West Brom disrespected the player by making his transfer request public.

Levy also defended their actions during the whole saga by saying that Spurs approached the negotiations in the most professional way possible.

In a statement released at the club’s official website, Levy said: “We have never, as a club, spoken about another team’s players and I am not about to do so now. However, I do want to make a few general points regarding transfers.

“Firstly, there is hardly a transfer concluded across Europe which doesn’t include staged payments. This is particularly so when significant amounts such as £20m-£30m are involved – players don’t come cheaply these days.

“Secondly, we do not make anything personal. None of the proposals, discussions or negotiations we undertake involve any personal elements or ego – everything we do is in the interest of what is best for our club.

“Thirdly, we never make anything public, particularly in the best interests of the players involved. Making aspects such as transfer requests public is wholly disrespectful to a player."

West Brom have given Berahino extra time off before he returns to training and are hoping to reintegrate him into Tony Pulis’ team as soon as possible.

The two sides do not meet in the league until 5th December, when Tottenham will take an away trip to the Hawthorns.
