Tottenham Hotspur have whacked striker Emmanuel Adebayor with a double blow by leaving the former Real Madrid man out of their squads for the Premier League and the Europa League.

Adebayor was linked with leaving White Hart Lane on transfer deadline day, with speculation of a move to either Aston Villa and West Ham.

Spurs tried to discuss terminating the 31-year-old's contract, but were stung by his demand for £5m to do so, the total being the value of the year remaining on his contract.

Adebayor stayed put at White Hart Lane, but has now been firmly declared surplus to requirements.

The hitman joined Spurs, initially on loan, in 2011. He then linked up with the north London side on a permanent basis a year later for £5m.

Adebayor has yet to play for Tottenham this season and now looks likely to spend until at least January kicking his heels.

Spurs did try to bring in another striker on transfer deadline day with repeated moves for Saido Berahino, but were rebuffed in their efforts by West Brom.
