Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed Anthony Martial to shine at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have made a hefty investment to prise the 19-year-old forward away from AS Monaco this summer and have handed him the number 9 shirt.

Manchester United are paying an initial fee of €50m to Monaco and the figure could rise up to €80m should Martial achieve certain goals at Old Trafford in the next few years.

While many have questioned Manchester United’s rationale in paying such a large sum for a teenage forward, Rooney is confident that the player will be a success at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United skipper admits that he has seen the player in action and is hoping that he proves to be an astute buy for the club.

Rooney also believes Martial has huge potential and has backed the youngster to become a Manchester United great in the future.

“I have obviously seen him play against Arsenal [in the Champions League]”, Rooney was quoted as saying by France Football.

“I hope he will prove to be a great signing for us.

“He has many qualities and from what I have seen, I am sure he will become a great player for us.”

Martial made his debut for France in their 1-0 win over Portugal last night and could make his Manchester United debut against Liverpool at Old Trafford after the international break.
