France coach Didier Deschamps is not surprised that Morgan Schneiderlin has ended up at Manchester United this summer.

The defensive midfielder has carved out a niche for himself in the French national squad and played a pivotal role, after replacing Yohan Cabaye in the second half in their 1-0 win over Portugal last night.

Deschamps was delighted to see the way Schneiderlin shielded his defence and recovered the ball in the middle of the park to win the midfield battle against the Portuguese towards the end of the game.

The France coach also indicated that Schneiderlin’s rise went under the radar for most in France because he was at Southampton for so long but admits that with his quality, he is not surprised that the midfielder has joined Manchester United.

Deschamps was quoted as saying by Foot Mercato: “He has got quality and is very good at recovering balls.

“After all he was at Southampton [for so many years] but he played some good seasons there.

“It is no coincidence that he is at Manchester United at the moment.”

If he keeps up his good performances for both club and country this season, the midfielder is expected to be part of Deschamps’ squad for next summer’s European Championship in France.

The Frenchman has also firmly established himself in Louis van Gaal’s plans for the season and is expected to start against Liverpool at Old Trafford next Saturday.
