Southampton captain Jose Fonte is looking forward to seeing former team-mate Luke Shaw back on the pitch as soon as possible.

The Manchester United left-back suffered a double fracture in his right leg during their Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

Shaw’s injury was operated on, on Tuesday night itself and Manchester United are hoping to see him make a full recovery in six months time, but some feel he might be out for the season.

His former Southampton team-mate Fonte admits that he felt uncomfortable after he saw the injury and revealed that he texted the left-back later to lift his spirits.

The defender is hopeful that Shaw will make a quick recovery and will be back playing for Manchester United as soon as possible.

“I felt sick when I saw it happen”, Fonte told the club’s YouTube channel.

“It’s something you don’t wish on anyone, let alone Luke who is one of the nicest kids I’ve seen. When I saw it happen I was really sad and I tried to lift him by dropping him a text.

“I know he’s a strong kid – he’ll be playing again soon. I just hope the recovery goes well because we need to have him on the pitch with that big smile that he has.”

Shaw is expected to head back to England later today and will start his long rehabilitation process under the guidance of the Manchester United doctors.

His chances of playing for England in next summer’s European Championship in France are also in jeopardy.
