Former Liverpool midfielder Nigel Spackman believes that the Reds' 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Saturday must be put into the context of Tim Sherwood's men being a very poor side.

Brendan Rodgers' side went into the game under pressure after a poor run of results and the Northern Irishman seeing his position at the club questioned.

But two Daniel Sturridge goals, which followed an early James Milner strike, were too much for Aston Villa to overcome and they slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Anfield.

Spackman believes that there were encouraging signs for Liverpool to take from the game, but admits that the Reds did come up against very poor opposition, which must be kept in mind.

He said on LFC TV: "The pressure has been on the lads. The pressure has been on everybody here at Anfield.

"The crowd turned up thinking are we going to do it today, against what I have to say is a very, very poor Aston Villa team as well. We must put that into perspective as well.

"But a win is a win. The three goals were good. The two that we've given away weren't good, but overall there are promising signs there."

Liverpool will aim to build on their victory over Aston Villa when they are next in action, Sion providing the opponents for a midweek Europa League clash.

Then the Reds have the Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park ahead of the international break.
