Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson feels a leaderless Arsenal team will always let their supporters down.

The Gunners are on the brink of Champions League elimination after suffering a dire defeat at the hands of Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium last night.

A goalkeeping howler from David Ospina and some shocking defending allowed the Greek side to record a win over an English team away from home for the first time in decades.

Lawrenson slammed Arsene Wenger for his side's performance and believes that Gunners boss has ignored the need for building leaders in his squad.

"[David] Seaman, [Lee] Dixon, [Steve] Bould, [Tony] Adams, [Martin] Keown, [Nigel] Winterburn, [Patrick] Vieira, [Emmanuel] Petit; they could all scrap, they were all leaders in their own way”, Lawrenson told BBC Radio 5 live.

“You ask any modern day manager and they will tell you it is very difficult to get leaders.

“Having inherited all those guys, it's almost as if Arsene Wenger has overlooked that position in his side.”

The former Liverpool defender feels Arsenal are not equipped to challenge for top honours because of the lack of leaders in their team and will always let their supporters down during big games.

“At the start of the season people said, ‘you know Mark, Arsenal might win the league this year’. I believe they won’t and the reasons they won’t win the league are that they are leaderless and they will always let you down.

“They haven’t got strong characters.”

The Gunners need to take something from Bayern Munich in their next two games against the German champions to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the round of 16.

They are the bottom of Group F after losing both their opening games against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos.
