Inter Milan are considering sending Martin Montoya back to Barcelona well before he completes his loan spell at the San Siro, according to Catalan daily Sport.

Montoya is a product of Barcelona's youth academy La Maisa, and having progressed through the ranks of the  youth system, he went on to play over 50 games for the first team.

However, Dani Alves ahead of him in the pecking order and the close season signing of Aleix Vidal saw the Catalan club loan the defender out to Inter Milan earlier this summer.

He joined Inter Milan on a two-season loan for an amount worth €1m, while the Italians have an option to make the move permanent for a fee of €7m at the conclusion of the loan spell.

The right-back featured in seven pre-season games for the Nerazzurri – five starts and two substitute appearances – but has since failed to get a single minute in  competitive games for the Italian giants.

And now it has been claimed that Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has travelled to Barcelona to terminate the defender’s contract in January and send him back to the Camp Nou.

Former Newcastle United defender Davide Santon has been the preferred right-back for manager Roberto Mancini, and Montoya is believed to not feature in his plans for the future.

Montoya’s return to the Camp Nou fold will be a complicated affair as he wasn’t prominent in manager Luis Enrique’s plans last season, and will have to compete with Dani Alves, Aleix Vidal, Douglas as well as converted right-back Sergi Roberto for a place in the first team.

However, he has been regularly linked with Liverpool over the last 18 months and could be a target for the Reds again if available.
