Ahead of tonight’s Europa League fixture against Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed that the Lilywhites are determined to do well in Europe this season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men finished fifth in the league standings last season and thereby qualified directly for the group stage of the Europa League. Last season, too, they were in the competition, but exited at the round of 32 stage after losing to Fiorentina of the Italian league.

The north Londoners are scheduled to face French Ligue 1 club Monaco in their second group stage game of the Europa League this season at the Stade Louis II tonight, and Vertonghen has emphasised the need for his team go out there and stick to their own game.

He further added that after their recent failings in the second tier of the European competition, the Premier League side are now determined to do well this season.

“They’re a very good team but hopefully we can go there and play our own game”, the defender was quoted as saying by his club’s site.

“They look strong and they’ve got lots of quality so we have to be on top of our game, but we want to do well in Europe this year.

“I think we showed that in the first game when we put out a strong team, so the plan is to go there, try to win and keep our momentum going.”
