Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is disappointed with his team’s Europa League draw against Monaco last night, saying that the Lilywhites were dominant in the encounter, but ended up losing two points.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men played their second group game of the Europa League campaign when they faced Monaco at the Stade Louis II last night. The visitors took the lead through Erik Lamela in the first half, but in the end had to contend with a draw as Stephan El Shaarawy grabbed a late equaliser.

Vertonghen, who has been plying his trade at White Hart Lane since the summer of 2012 when he landed at the north London club from Ajax Amsterdam, feels that his team were dominant in the encounter and deserved more than a draw.

“We created a lot of good chances”, he told Spurs TV.

“I think on the pitch we never felt that we are going to concede. Of course, we didn’t have 90 per cent possession, but we didn’t give too many chances away.

“For us, it feels like a bit of a defeat but in the last ten minutes Monaco were the ones who were looking for a win, not us.”

“Sometimes you are waiting to concede a goal, but we didn’t feel like that today. We defended well as a team and it was surprise when they scored.”

Spurs will be up against Anderlecht of the Belgian top flight in their next Europa League fixture and will look to grab all three points from the away game.
