Former Chelsea and England defender Graeme Le Saux believes that Newcastle United's players were wrong not to acknowledge the support of their fans at the Etihad Stadium today.

Newcastle were blown away 6-1 by Manchester City, with Sergio Aguero helping himself to five goals in the romp.

The Toon Army were left unhappy at the Magpies' players failing to come over to their end of the ground and acknowledge their support at the end of the match, with some players who did head in their direction only seeming to get half way.

Le Saux feels Newcastle's players should have thanked the fans, however he believes they had probably been left shell-shocked by the drubbing which had just been inflicted upon them.

"Steve McClaren has asked them to do that every game so far and he's gone out there, so they should have kept that going, especially off the back of that defeat", Le Saux said on BBC Final Score.

"But they were probably too busy picking their jaws up."

Newcastle's fans paid £44 for a ticket to watch their team, who are now lodged to the bottom of the Premier League standings with only three points from eight games.

The Magpies will be hoping to quickly bounce back, but have the international break on the horizon now, meaning they are not next in action until 18th October when they host Norwich City at St. James' Park.
