West Ham defender Carl Jenkinson feels his side should have beaten Sunderland today, after they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against ten men.

Sunderland surged into the lead in only the tenth minute at the Stadium of Light when Steven Fletcher got on the end of a well-worked corner to fire a left-footed shot into the back of the net from around the penalty spot.

It was then 2-0 for the hosts in the 22nd minute thanks to Jeremain Lens who hit a superb shot to chip the ball over West Ham goalkeeper Adrian.

But on the stroke of half time the Hammers hit back to reduce the deficit, Jenkinson firing the ball underneath the Sunderland goalkeeper following a run and cross from Victor Moses.

In the 55th minute, Lens was sent off after a messy challenge made when he was already on a yellow card.

And five minutes later West Ham were level after Dimitri Payet was on hand to convert a loose ball.

Despite the Hammers pushing they could not find a winner, leaving Jenkinson feeling that his side should have taken all three points from the fixture.

"We have done well to get back in the game, of course the way game went when they had a man sent off we should have got the three points, but it’s not easy against 10 men", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Our first goal changed the game and there was only one team that was going to win it in the second half, but we knew it was going to be a tough game", Jenkinson added.
