Arsenal forward Theo Walcott feels that their 3-0 win over Manchester United today was a statement of intent from them for this season.

Manchester United came into the game on the back of a good run but were blown away by a blitzkrieg launched by Arsenal in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in the first ten minutes shocked the away side and before they could recover from the initial blows, the Chilean scored another belter from outside the box in the 19th minute to give the Gunners a flying start.

While Manchester United controlled the ball after the initial shock and Petr Cech did make some good saves during the game, the Red Devils rarely looked like coming back into the match after the first 20 minutes.

Walcott feels that after the disappointment in the Champions League, Arsenal needed a performance like this and insisted that while they eased after the initial flurry, the whole team were keen to get the clean sheet to their name today too.

Speaking to the BBC, the England striker said: "After the Olympiacos disappointment we started this game completely differently.

“We caught them on the break, we maybe eased off in the second half but the clean sheet was crucial for the whole team today.

"This game will send out a message to the Premier League that we are ready to have a go this season."
