Liverpool legend Graeme Souness is not sure why the Reds appointed Brendan Rodgers in the first place.

The Reds announced a little while ago that the club have decided to part ways with Rodgers and the search for a new Liverpool manager is under way.

Following another summer of heavy spending, Rodgers failed to lead his side to a good start this season and the draw in the Merseyside derby earlier today was the last nail in his coffin.

Souness is surprised that the club decided to sack the Northern Irishman after allowing him to spend big for the second summer running and admits that he is baffled by their decision to part ways with the manager after just eight games.

However, he also feels the former Swansea boss should not have got the job in the first place, when they hired him to replace Kenny Dalglish at the start of the 2012/13 season.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: “I'm stunned.

“They gave him a load of money in the summer and I find it amazing. But with all due respect I don’t see why they gave Brendan Rodgers the job in the first place.”

The Liverpool legend is also unhappy with the way the club are run at the moment and believes the once mighty Reds have now become a selling club.

"Liverpool go out and buy the best young players, develop them and then hope to sell them. They have become a selling club."
