Former England striker Ian Wright has expressed his shock at seeing Brendan Rodgers sacked as Liverpool manager, but believes that it had been a long time in coming for the Northern Irishman and the Reds do not need to answer to anyone over his dismissal.

The 42-year-old was sacked after today's 1-1 draw against Everton, a result that saw Liverpool in tenth spot in the league table after eight matches.

Rodgers, who had taken over at Anfield in 2012, had failed to win a trophy during his three-year stint at the club, his only memorable moment coming during the 2013/14 season when his side came close to winning the league title only to be denied by Manchester City at a very late stage.

According to Wright, Rodgers, who received a massive boost while being appointed the Liverpool manager, failed to deliver, spending a third of a billion on players since taking over, but producing nothing.

As a result the sacking had been coming and for a club of Liverpool's stature they need not be answerable to anyone in that respect.

"I am shocked, he was meant to be the new kid on the block. He was one of the British coaches, but it has not worked out for him", Wright was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Despite his 'Luis Suarez' season where they finished second, his signings and tactics haven't worked. It went steadily down hill.

"He had run out of time, it is unfortunate for him, but I don't think Liverpool owed him that time, they gave him a lot of money to spend.

"The club are nowhere near where they want to be. A club of Liverpool's size do not need to answer to anyone.

"They have acted swiftly and decisively, they had to, there are people out there who can come in."
