Arsene Wenger feels Manchester United were caught napping by his side early in their game today.

A sublime first 20 minutes from Arsenal, which produced three goals, shocked Manchester United and gave the Gunners one of their biggest wins of the season.

Manchester United came into the game on a good run of form, but Louis van Gaal’s men were completely overrun by Arsenal’s pace and passing in those fatal 20 minutes and they never really recovered from the initial blows.

Wenger feels his team caught the Red Devils by surprise and insisted that it was important that they didn’t allow the away side to get a foothold in the game after the initial blitzkrieg.

Speaking to the BBC, the Arsenal boss said: "We started strong and pressed very high.

"We did not give them any chances to score and that was vital. We surprised them with our start.”

Wenger was pleased with the performance of his whole side, but indicated that it is wrong to expect them to keep maintaining such high levels of performance throughout the season.

"From Petr Cech to Theo Walcott we only had superb performances. I have managed many strong teams and never had one that played 60 games at the same level.

“You have to accept that we are human beings."

With an international break next week, Arsenal will be hoping to keep hold of their momentum when they visit Watford on the 17th of this month.
