Dietmar Hamann has backed Jurgen Klopp to be the perfect fit for Liverpool, just as it emerged the former Borussia Dortmund coach has sounded out his countryman.

Klopp is now the firm favourite to succeed Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked on Sunday, as Liverpool manager, with talk a deal could be done for the German by the end of the week.

Hamann, who played for Liverpool between 1999 and 2006, has been sounded out by Klopp, who wanted to know all about the Reds as a club, the city and the fans.

And Hamann has quickly offered his backing to Klopp, while stressing that Rodgers should not feel hard done to despite being sacked.

"Rodgers can’t have any complaints. The mood changed towards the end of last season & they could have sacked him in the summer but decided to change the backroom staff instead, which destabilised him further", Hamann wrote on BreatheSport.

"The replacement? I think Klopp is tailor-made for Liverpool.

"He works well at clubs that need rebuilding by bringing energy & enthusiasm. He speaks English & the fans will really take to him", Hamann added.

It remains to be seen whether Hamann, a former Germany international, is offered a position working with Klopp at Anfield, if the former Borussia Dortmund boss is appointed.

Hamann has experience of the Premier League, while Klopp and his backroom staff will be new to England's top flight.
