Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes that going with a 4-4-2 formation would benefit the Whites in the long run.

Peacocks boss Uwe Rosler prefers to operate with one central striker supported by two wingers, with Chris Wood the man he has regularly trusted as his side's spearhead.

But results have largely been disappointing as Rosler's side languish in a disappointing 16th position in the league table at present with just two wins from their ten league matches.

Their overall goal tally has also been nothing to write home about with the side having managed only nine goals while having conceded 13.

Whelan, who played for the Peacocks between 1993 and 1995, feels that operating with a 4-4-2 formation may be the best way forward.

The winger issue now being solved, Whelan feels that his former side do not need extra presence in midfield and Mirco Antenucci and Wood should be allowed to play freely up front with one complementing the other.

"I think we possibly have to change the tactics at Elland Road and for me I would go 4-4-2", Whelan wrote in his Yorkshire Evening Post column.

"We’ve got out-and-out wingers now so we don’t need to worry about our formation where we have got to bolster the midfield.

"We’ve got Antenucci who can run in behind and we’ve got Wood that can hold the ball up, we’ve seen them play together and do extremely well together and they can have a nice understanding.

"And I think the longer they play together and we have natural wingers, when these crosses are coming in repeatedly, they will get in the box as they will be expecting that cross and the wingers will expect the forwards to be in there."
