Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie feels Brendan Rodgers has left good foundations at Anfield, on which his successor can build for future success.

Rodgers was sacked following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Everton and the former Swansea boss eventually paid for an increasing amount of lackadaisical performances from his side this season.

Gillespie believes the Northern Irishman had been under mounting pressure since the end of the 2014/15 campaign and needed a good start to the season to save his job, which never happened.

“I think Brendan has been a manager under pressure”, Gillespie told LFC TV.

“I thought they had to start the season particularly well and he hasn’t done that. It has been a stop-start season, stuttering a bit and the performances haven’t been great.”

Liverpool are actively pursuing former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp as Rodgers' replacement and could announce his appointment by the end of the week.

The former Reds defender feels Rodgers hasn’t left the club at a bad state and with Champions League qualification still a realistic possibility, Gillespie feels Liverpool have the squad to achieve their goals this season.

“We are tenth in the league, but we are only three points off the top four so I think Brendan has left us in an OK state.

“The squad can challenge for Champions League and normally a new manager comes into a club in the bottom three, but Liverpool have a great opportunity to finish in the top four.

“So the new man has a reasonable chance to be successful.”

Liverpool play Tottenham on the 17th of this month and the club hierarchy are keen to get Klopp or any other manager on board soon, so that he has enough time to prepare for their next fixture.
