Manchester United defender Paddy McNair admits that he was disappointed to see Jonny Evans leave the club and join West Brom in the summer.

Evans was made aware that he was not in Louis van Gaal’s plans for the future and the defender never featured for Manchester United this season before he joined the Baggies in the summer.

McNair, his international team-mate, admits that it was hard to see the 27-year-old leave Old Trafford as his compatriot did help him to settle down in the first team last season.

The youngster made his debut for the club last term and he revealed that Evans played a key role in helping him to get used to the first team environment.

However, McNair is confident that his compatriot will prove to be a great addition to West Brom’s squad and revealed that the 27-year-old is excited to finally play regular football at the Hawthorns.

“Yeah, I was a little bit sad because he helped me a lot when I came into this team at United”, McNair told United Review.

“He is a Northern Ireland international as well but I’m sure Jonny will do well at West Brom. It’s definitely a good move for him with Darren Fletcher and Anders Lindegaard there as well.

“He’s a good player and will do well there, 100 per cent. I saw him shortly after the move with Ireland and he was happy, and excited to be playing regularly again.”

A product of their academy, Evans made 198 appearances for the Red Devils and won three Premier League titles, a Champions League and two League Cups during his time at Old Trafford.
