Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he would have appointed Ryan Giggs as his assistant had the former midfielder retired at the age of 35.

Ferguson was at the helm of the Red Devils for close to 27 years before he retired at the end of the 2012/13 season and during his tenure he guided the side to 13 league titles and two Champions League wins. His tenure also saw the promotion of several youth players, including current club assistant manager Giggs, into regular first team members.

Giggs went on to become the player with maximum appearances of any player for the Red Devils before he hung up his boots at the end of the 2013/14 season at the age of 40 and became assistant to current club boss Louis van Gaal.

Ferguson has revealed that had Giggs retired at 35, he would have appointed him his assistant.

"If Ryan Giggs had retired at, say, 35, it is quite likely I'd have made him my assistant”, the 73-year-old told Secrets of Success, a BBC One documentary.

"And quite likely he could have moved right into the job as he is doing with Louis van Gaal at the moment."

However, Ferguson stressed it was not his place to tell Giggs to retire.

"But I would never ask a player to quit."
