Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has revealed that he received a congratulatory text message from club legend Steven Gerrard when he was named the skipper of the Reds for last month’s Europa League fixture against Bordeaux.

Sakho has been at Anfield since the summer of 2013 when he signed from reigning French champions Paris Saint-Germain and has gone on to make over 50 appearances for the Reds across all competitions.

The defender was named captain of the side by then manager Brendan Rodgers as Jordan Henderson was out nursing an injury and James Milner was rested for the Reds’ Europa League opener against Bordeaux last month.

And the Frenchman has revealed that Gerrard, who is a club legend and moved to the MLS at the conclusion of the 2014/15 season, texted him on his elevation to the club captaincy.

"Steven is an example”, the defender was quoted as saying by his club’s site.

"Also, he often sends me small text messages like after my first match of the season at Bordeaux, in the Europa League, with the captain's armband.

"He texted me to congratulate me. He said: ‘Continue to fight like that, I'm proud of you.’

"It's always nice to receive such a message from a great player."

Sakho has played five games across all competitions this season so far.
