Spanish playmaker Juan Mata admits that Victor Valdes’ treatment at Manchester United has been disappointing.

Valdes signed for Manchester United on a free transfer in January, following spending time at the club’s training complex while he was recovering from a knee injury.

He even made two appearances for Louis van Gaal’s side at the end of last season, but the Dutchman decided to omit him from the pre-season squad that travelled to the United States during the summer.

The Manchester United boss revealed that Valdes refused to play a few Under-21 games, which he feels was against his philosophy, and the goalkeeper has been asked to find a new club.

The former Barcelona goalkeeper failed to find a new side in the summer and has been completely frozen out from the first team picture at Old Trafford.

Mata revealed that it is disappointing for him to see his compatriot suffer at Old Trafford and indicated that as a top class proven goalkeeper, Valdes deserves to play.

“It’s a shame what is happening with him, as he is a great goalkeeper”, Mata was quoted as saying by Marca.

“He wants to compete and has proved himself as a goalkeeper.”

The Spaniard refused to speculate on the reason why Van Gaal and Valdes fell out and insisted that it is only for the duo to explain.

“I don’t know what happened between him and Van Gaal; that is something, only they can say.”
