Former Valencia and Middlesbrough midfielder Gaizka Mendieta believes things are not looking good for Liverpool, even with a new manager, as the team was formed for Brendan Rodgers.

The Merseyside club are close to officially confirming that Jurgen Klopp has signed a three-year deal, but Mendieta thinks it will not be smooth sailing at Anfield.

The Spaniard believes that the current Liverpool squad is shaped to suit Rodgers' needs, meaning it will need significant changing to be shaped to fit another manager's requirements.

But he does also feel that Rodgers' successor will at least have most of the season to try to get his philosophy through to the players at Liverpool.

Mendieta exclusively told Inside Futbol: "It’s not good news whenever a manager is sacked.

"Sacking the manager early in the season gives the new manager more time to come in and address all things, trying to impose his philosophy and his way of thinking.

"This team was made and prepared for Brendan Rodgers and now he is no longer there.

"A new manager will come in and will want to do things differently. On paper it’s not looking good for Liverpool", he added.

Neverthless, Liverpool fans are gripped by excitement at Klopp taking over, as the Reds attempt to force their way back into the Premier League's top four following a finish of just sixth under Rodgers last season.

Klopp's first match as Reds boss is set to come away to Tottenham Hotspur after the international break.
