Former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet believes that Sam Allardyce is the right man to take up the reins of the Black Cats.

Sunderland are looking for a manager after Dick Advocaat left the club in the aftermath of his team’s draw against West Ham United last weekend. The club are struggling in the league this term as they are still looking to register their first win of the season after eight rounds of games.

Poyet, who was at the helm of the Black Cats from 2013 until his departure in 2015 that led to the appointment of Advocaat, has said that Allardyce should become the next manager at the Stadium of Light.

However, he conceded that former West Ham boss Allardyce could be having different thoughts on the matter.

"Sam Allardyce should be Sunderland's next appointment”, the Uruguayan was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"But first of all I don't know if Sam would like to go and maybe I'm putting it a little on Sam and he is going to kill me next time I see him."

Allardyce was last at West Ham and left the club at the end of the last season; he has also had stint with Sunderland’s fierce rivals Newcastle in 2007/08.

And Poyet feels that the 60-year-old has the right experience and credentials to help the Black Cats climb out of their current predicament and keep them in the English top flight.

"He had an experience before in the north east.

"He knows the Premier League inside out and he knows exactly what a team needs to do to stay in the Premier League."
