Chelsea have officially announced the signing of goalkeeper Marco Amelia on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old had been training with the Blues in a bid to impress Jose Mourinho and was available as a free agent following his departure from Serie B side Perugia earlier this year.

A former AC Milan player, Amelia has put pen to paper on a contract running until the end of the current season.

The Italian shot-stopper has been handed the number 32 shirt at Chelsea and is available for the Blues' match against Aston Villa after the international break.

Chelsea suffered a blow earlier this season when Thibaut Courtois picked up an injury, sidelining the Belgian goalkeeper for several months.

Courtois is only expected to return to action in December this year.

Mourinho was keen to sign another experienced goalkeeper and in Amelia has his man, with the custodian also having spells with Livorno, Palermo and Genoa to his name.
