Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of the England national team for tomorrow’s European Championship qualifier against Estonia.

The forward has not been able to train fully since he joined Roy Hodgson’s squad, owing to an injury he sustained in Manchester United’s weekend defeat at the hands of Arsenal.

And it has now been confirmed that he will sit out the Estonia clash due to his injury.

In his absence, team vice-captain Gary Cahill will be handed the captaincy of the side for tomorrow’s qualifier.

Rooney became the all-time leading England goalscorer when he struck from the penalty spot in the Three Lions’ last game against Switzerland.

However, the forward will remain with the squad and will receive a commemorative golden boot from Sir Bobby Charlton – whose record he overtook to become the leading goalscorer for England – for his achievement.

England will be favourites against Estonia, who are lying fourth in Group E with ten points in their tally.
