Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Jurgen Klopp to be a success at Liverpool.

The Merseyside club are on the brink of pulling off a remarkable coup by securing the services of one of the most sought-after managers in European football, with Klopp expected to be announced as Liverpool's new boss as soon as later today.

German managers have not conquered the Premier League as have their foreign counterparts, but Ferguson does not see any reason why Klopp cannot succeed at Anfield.

The now Manchester United director and ambassador was quoted by France Football as telling German magazine Kicker: "The Scots, Portuguese, Spaniards, French and Italians are successful here, so why not a German?

"There is no reason not to be confident", Ferguson added.

Given the fierce rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool however, Ferguson is likely to cross his fingers to hope for Klopp to fail at Anfield.

The German, who led Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and the final of the Champions League, should be in place for Liverpool's next Premier League match, which is a trip to face Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane after the international break.

Klopp will be aiming to ensure a top four finish and a return to the Champions League for Liverpool.
