Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher doesn’t feel Jurgen Klopp will receive significant funds to spend on the Reds squad before next summer.

The Merseyside club announced the appointment of the former Borussia Dortmund coach as their new manager on a three-year deal, yesterday.

Since sacking Brendan Rodgers on Sunday after the Merseyside derby, the club hierarchy made some swift moves to secure the services of the 48-year-old German.

Carragher has indicated that hiring Klopp was a brave decision from the Liverpool owners and a departure from their style of appointments they have shown since they took the reins of the club a few years ago.

“You have to look at his track record”, Carragher said on Sky Sports News HQ.

“Brendan Rodgers came from Swansea, Kenny Dalglish was not managing at that time and Roy Hodgson came from Fulham, so you have to say it’s an upgrade to what they have done before.

“Hopefully he can replicate that job at Liverpool but he has definitely come with a fantastic CV.”

While he feels Klopp will need to spend some money in January to upgrade the current Liverpool squad, the former defender doesn’t believe he will get the funds to do so.

Carragher feels Liverpool have already spent the lion’s share of the transfer budget in the summer and he doesn’t feel the German will get significant funds to work with until the end of the season.

When asked whether Klopp needs to spend money in the winter transfer window, the former England defender said: “He needs to.

“I don’t know whether he has been promised funds; Liverpool have spent a lot of money in the summer, the owners of the club are not like Roman Abramovich.

“A lot of the club’s money might have been already spent, so it might not be before next summer before he gets what he wants.”
