Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre has revealed that the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as the manager of the Reds was a collective decision and the German ticked all the boxes that led to his acquisition.

The Merseyside giants were in the market for a manager after the sacking of Brendan Rodgers following a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park in their last league encounter, and were linked with Carlo Ancelotti as well as Klopp for the role.

They ultimately announced the appointment of the former Borussia Dortmund boss on Thursday.

Klopp had a seven-year stint with the Black and Yellows and guided the side to two league titles, a DFB Pokal as well as the final of the 2013 Champions League; however, he resigned from his post after a difficult 2014/15 campaign and took a sabbatical from management.

Ayre has revealed that the appointment of the German was a collective decision of the Liverpool hierarchy and the 48-year-old fitted the bill perfectly to be the next manager of the Reds.

“When we set out to find a replacement for Brendan, it was important we found somebody that fitted the bill completely”, the CEO told his club’s site.

“We met as a group – the owners and myself – and talked about the attributes we would want in the next Liverpool manager and all of the ambition and things we want to achieve as a club.

“His name rose to the top in terms of the attributes he has and what we believe he can bring, and the sort of person he is.

“Having got all of those boxes ticked, it was then about getting Jurgen and I’m pleased to say we achieved that.”
