Jurgen Klopp has insisted that he is from a very normal background and wants to enjoy his work at Liverpool.

The Reds appointed the former Borussia Dortmund coach as their new manager yesterday on a three-year contract. He replaced Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked last Sunday, following the Merseyside derby.

There is palpable excitement around Anfield and amongst the Liverpool fans around the arrival of the 48-year-old German to Merseyside but Klopp decided to play down the euphoria.

Jose Mourinho famously termed himself the ‘Special One’ in his first press conference as Chelsea manager in 2004 but the new Liverpool boss remained modest.

He revealed that he is someone from a very modest background, who had a great opportunity to manage at the Westfalenstadion and is now looking forward to his time at Anfield with Liverpool.

When asked how he would describe himself on his arrival at Liverpool, Klopp said in a press conference: “I am the normal one.

“I was a very average player, became a trainer at a normal club [Mainz]. I had the opportunity to manage a special club such as Dortmund, and after seven years I am here.

“I hope to enjoy my time here.”

‘The normal one’ has his work cut out as his first assignment as Liverpool manager is an away trip to Tottenham next Saturday.
