Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has suffered a thigh injury on international duty with Germany and will be a doubt for his club's next league fixture against Everton.

The veteran midfielder was unable to play a part for the World champions as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against Republic of Ireland.

The German Football Association, while confirming the news on their official Twitter feed ahead of the match, stated: "@BSchweinsteiger picked up an injury during the pre-match warm-up and will miss the game.”

The result against Ireland was a bit of dampener for Joachim Low's team, who have been on a role of late, having won their last three matches and thus leading Group D with 19 points from nine matches.

The loss now means that the Germans still require a point from their final Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia this Sunday to go through to the final stage.

Though Low refused to confirm the intensity of the injury, he took time to reveal that the medical staff has told him that the former Bayern Munich midfielder will need "two or three days' rest."

“For Schweinsteiger I will need to see”, Low said.

"The medical staff said two or three days’ rest.”
