Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal legend Tony Adams would always find that extra bit to be at his best even when he was not 100 per cent fit.

The former England captain is a cult figure amongst the Gunners faithful and skippered the Arsenal side for 14 years from the age of 21.

Adams has the unique distinction of leading title winning sides at Arsenal in three different decades and was already a massive player for the Gunners when Wenger arrived in north London in 1996.

The Frenchman paid tribute to the former Arsenal captain and said that what made Adams a great leader was his intelligence and the ability to use his qualities to their optimum levels.

“First of all he was a very intelligent player who could analyse very well what was going on during the game”, Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“He could use his qualities and intelligence to use them at an optimum level.”

The Arsenal boss was also a fan of Adams’ attitude and revealed that the former defender was always ready to give his best, even when he was not at his peak condition.

“He was a mixture of a laid-back player who was very fierce and strong pride. He could always find that when he was bad like he had a bad ankle you wondered if he could play at the day of a competition.

“This is the guy that always found the resources to be at his best.”

Adams recently said that what made him a good captain is that besides being confident and arrogant, he also had the talent as a defender to back up all the talk.
