Former Dutch player Hans Kraay jr, who now coaches lower league outfit DOVO, believes that Frank de Boer and not Guus Hiddink should have succeeded Louis van Gaal as Netherlands boss.

Van Gaal led the Netherlands to third place at the 2014 World Cup before departing to take charge of Manchester United. The Dutch FA swiftly turned to experienced boss Hiddink to replace Van Gaal, but his disastrous reign ended in June this year with the Netherlands struggling to qualify for Euro 2016; Danny Blind took charge.

Kraay jr thinks that Hiddink should never have been appointed and current Ajax coach Frank de Boer should have got the job.

And, Kraay jr says, De Boer should have been appointed because he coaches his players in the same style as Van Gaal.

Kraay jr said on FOX Sports: "It should have been Frank de Boer.

"I've seen De Boer take training over a thousand times and he trains the players just like Van Gaal."

Currently Blind in charge of the Netherlands national side and the country's hopes of reaching Euro 2016 next summer hang in the balance following a poor qualifying campaign.

While the Netherlands beat Kazakhstan 2-1 this weekend, Turkey defeated the Czech Republic, which means they only need a point at home to Iceland in their final qualifier to seal a playoff spot at the Oranje's expense.

The Netherlands must hope Turkey lose while they beat the Czech Republic at home.
