French full-back Patrice Evra has revealed that his decision to leave Manchester United last year was made for his family.

Evra spent eight trophy-laden years at Old Trafford following his arrival from AS Monaco in January 2006 and was a big part of Manchester United’s success during that period.

The Frenchman was also a popular player amongst the Manchester United faithful and was a major voice inside the dressing room, along with other senior players.

However, following former manager David Moyes’ tumultuous reign in the 2013/14 campaign, Evra decided to pack his bags at Old Trafford and joined Juventus on a free transfer last summer.

The 34-year-old admits that leaving Manchester United was a heartbreaking experience for him and the club did want to keep him at Old Trafford.

But he admits that he made the choice to move to Juventus because of his family and feels it was the right decision to take at that time.

“It was a choice made by my family”, Evra told RMC.

“It’s hard to talk about it now. It was heartbreaking, but I made the choice for my family. I do not want to talk about the details.

“Manchester didn’t want to me to leave, but before the end of the league season, I explained that I had to leave.

“It was good choice, but I didn’t want it from my heart.”

In 379 appearances for the Red Devils, the Frenchman won five Premier League titles, three League Cups and a Champions League crown with the club.
