Liverpool are considering making a move for Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia in the winter transfer window.

While it has been little more than a week since Jurgen Klopp took over the reins at Anfield, the new manager is already on his way towards assessing his squad and is expected to dip into the club’s funds in January.

Liverpool’s defence has been the team’s Achilles heels for the last few seasons and the German is keen to add more meat and experience to his backline during the winter window.

And according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the new Liverpool boss is planning to prise Italy defender Ranocchia away from Inter Milan when the opportunity arrives in January.

The 27-year-old defender has been an important part of the Inter squad over the last few seasons, but is struggling to hold down a place in Roberto Mancini’s playing eleven this term.

He is yet to start a game for the Nerazzurri this season and there is speculation that he will be ready to move if someone offers him regular first team football in January.

A seasoned defender, it has been suggested that the Reds are keen to add his vital experience to Klopp’s squad for the second half of the season, as Liverpool look to secure Champions League football.

Ranocchia has a contract until 2019 and Mancini is unlikely to sell him, unless a replacement is lined up.
