Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has urged Leeds United's fans to succeed in their plans to take control of the club and admitted he would like to see fan ownership at Villa Park.

Leeds United chairman Massimo Cellino, who owns a majority stake at Elland Road, has agreed in principle to sell his shares to supporter group Leeds Fans United.

It is unclear whether the fan group will be able to finance a deal to buy Cellino out, but Collymore is hoping they can and wishes something similar would take place at Aston Villa.

Collymore took to Twitter to write: "Leeds United fans. Do it.

"Your club in your hands. Wish we at #AVFC would do the same. Good luck", he added.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds, who currently sit a lowly 19th in the Championship, will be sold to Leeds Fans United.

Cellino does not own the entire club, with a 22 per cent shareholding being owned by GFH Capital.

Aston Villa meanwhile are bottom of the Premier League table.
