Landon Donovan believes Steven Gerrard has found life in the MLS tough as he struggles to adapt to the American top flight.

Gerrard linked up with the Galaxy in the summer when his contract at boyhood club Liverpool expired. But the former England captain could not help Los Angeles Galaxy defend their MLS title as they slipped out to Seattle Sounders in the first round of the playoffs.

Donovan feels Gerrard has found it difficult to adapt, but he thinks that the Englishman is only one of a clutch of high profile players who have needed time to get their feet under the table in America.

"As Gerrard said, it is difficult to adjust", Donovan was quoted as saying by beIN Sports.

"I think David Beckham went through it too when he first came. For most people the league is more difficult than they think", the former Everton man continued.

"It is not necessarily better quality than where they come from, but it is a very fast-paced, physical league.

"When you couple the travelling and the heat and different things, it makes it difficult."

Gerrard has headed back to England for the festive period and will work as a TV pundit before returning to California in the new year to start pre-season training ahead of the 2016 MLS campaign.
