Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic admits that Aleksandar Mitrovic is struggling in England, but feels goals will do a lot for his confidence.

The Serbian was a prolific goalscorer in the Belgian top tier with Anderlecht and Newcastle United paid a considerable amount of money to bring him to England in the summer.

However, Mitrovic has found it difficult to find the back of the net in a Newcastle team who are themselves struggling to put together a good run of form this season.

The 21-year-old forward has scored just twice in ten Premier League appearances for the Magpies and has also struggled with discipline, which is mirrored by the fact that he has picked up three yellow cards and a red card already this season.

Ivanovic admits that his Serbia team-mate has looked sluggish this season for both Newcastle and his national team, but feels goals will help him to regain his lost confidence.

The defender told Novosti: “Mitrovic looks slow and heavy, but he needs a goal and your support.”

The Serbian squad have also attracted flak for not qualifying for next summer’s European Championship, but the Chelsea defender feels the criticism will go away once they show signs of improvement.

“The criticism should subside. Behind closed doors we know what needs to improve in the future. This task is not for the media.”
