Steven Gerrard feels it was always going to be difficult for Liverpool to compete for the league title, especially against the resources of teams such as Manchester City and Chelsea.

Gerrard won the Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and even the UEFA Cup during his time at Liverpool, but never managed to wear a league winners’ medal at Anfield.

Liverpool have finished runners-up three times during the Premier League era, but never managed to properly build on those seasons to remain a consistent challenger for the league title.

The midfielder is keen to win a league title with his new side LA Galaxy, but admits that nothing will help him to forget the pain of not lifting the Premier League during his career in England.

“I think it’d be fantastic to win the league over here, but it certainly wouldn’t make amends for finishing second three times”, Gerrard told Eurosport International.

"They were very frustrating and disappointing moments and experiences I’ll never forget. But certainly the plan and the target for me, and the dream, is to try and become champion in the USA.”

The former England captain believes the playing field in England is skewed as clubs such as Manchester City and Chelsea have vast financial resources because of their owners, which makes it difficult for a side such as Liverpool to challenge them every season.

“I have to look at myself and the team and take responsibility for not being a champion in England, but of course the Premier League is very difficult, because every year two people – Mr Abramovich and the Sheikh at Manchester City – they pile in fortunes of money every single year so for clubs like Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal it becomes much more difficult.

“I think it is more level here, and more balanced. I’m not complaining, it’s the rules. It’s just the way it is.”

Gerrard came close to lifting the Premier League in the 2013/14 season, only to see Liverpool collapse during the last few games of the campaign to allow Manchester City to win the title.
