Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne believes Manchester City have Joe Hart to thank for not having lost by seven or eight goals to the Reds at the Etihad Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp's team were too good for Manchester City across the park in the Premier League encounter and carved open Manuel Pellegrini's men time and again on the counter-attack.

It was 3-1 to Liverpool at half time and then after the Reds weathered a storm in the opening part of the second half they went again, forcing Hart to make good saves.

Liverpool did get a fourth when Martin Skrtel blasted a shot in the 81st minute into the back of the net, following him turning in the penalty area.

Clyne thinks that if Hart had not been in good form then the final score could have been embarrassing for Manchester City.

He said on LFC TV: "We came right out of the races on the front foot. We took the game to them and gave them no time on the ball.

"You could see today we can't let teams like Manchester City have the ball, that's why we press so high up the pitch.

"We got our goals and probably could have got more goals.

"Joe Hart made some great saves. On another day they could have gone in and we could have had seven or eight", Clyne added.

Liverpool's win means they have now firmly put the pain of a home defeat to Crystal Palace before the international break behind them.
