Cristiano Ronaldo is wanted at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted.

The Real Madrid forward, who left Manchester United in 2009 for the Spanish giants for a then world-record transfer fee of £80m, has regularly been linked with returning to his former club.

Van Gaal would love to be able to call upon Ronaldo at Old Trafford, but concedes he is playing the waiting game on whether a deal could happen.

The Dutchman was quoted as saying by the BBC: "We are looking at all players, not just Ronaldo. But these players are mostly ungettable. [sic]

"With Ronaldo, let's wait and hope", the former Barcelona manager added.

Ronaldo has enjoyed glittering personal success since he joined Real Madrid, but has only won the Spanish title once in six years.

The Portuguese took part in El Clasico yesterday, which resulted in Barcelona crushing Real Madrid 4-0 at the Bernabeu to extend their lead at the top of La Liga.

It remains to be seen whether another year without the Spanish title could cause Ronaldo to push to return to Manchester United.
