West Ham United defender James Tomkins believes a good 2015/16 campaign will be a great stepping stone for the club as they prepare to move to the new Olympic Stadium next season.

The Hammers, who are currently sixth in the Premier League standings with 21 points from 13 games, will vacate their famous Boleyn Ground after the end of the season.

West Ham finished 12th in the league last term, and Tomkins wants his side to improve on that in the present campaign.

The 26-year-old, who has progressed through the club’s youth academy, feels a good finish to the season, coupled with their move to the new stadium in the summer, will show that the London outfit are heading in the right direction.

“The move feels like it is just around the corner and we are not far away from doing it now”, Tomkins told the club’s official site.

“We need to continue having a good start to the season and it is a great stepping stone to see how far we have progressed.

“We finished 12th last season and we want to improve on that season. This is the perfect timing to see what direction we want to head in.”

West Ham, who are due to host West Bromwich Albion at the weekend, are currently in the midst of a mini slump after managing to pick up just a solitary point from their last three Premier League games.
