Steve Evans is likely to turn to Lee Erwin following Leeds United's frustrating time trying to sign a striker in the emergency loan window.

The Leeds boss wanted to add another striker to the ranks before the window closed and targeted Middlesbrough's Kike and Swansea City's Marvin Emnes. However, he made no progress on either bid and Leeds' only signing was midfielder Liam Bridcutt from Sunderland.

Evans does believe he has a quality performer already at the club in Erwin though, someone he feels was signed in the summer and then shipped out too soon on loan to Bury by his predecessor Uwe Rosler, who deemed him not good enough for the first team.

Speaking at a press conference, Evans said: "We're working desperately hard behind the scenes to get the likes of Lee Erwin up to speed and it takes a little bit of time.

"If you are brought into a football club with high hopes and really fit, and then put out to grass in the field so to speak, you can't expect him in two weeks, or three weeks under myself and my staff to suddenly be fit", the Leeds boss continued.

"But we're working hard because there's some quality behind us."

Evans has been deploying Chris Wood and Mirco Antenucci as his two strikers since he took charge of Leeds and it remains to be seen whether Erwin can force his way into the team on a regular basis.

Leeds snapped Erwin up from Scottish side Motherwell in the summer, beating off competition from Rotherham, where Evans was in charge until September.
