Ex-England international Michael Owen has criticised Manchester United’s lack of attacking intent, following their goalless draw with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last night.

The Red Devils have been defensively strong this season, having conceded just 13 goals in 19 games in all competitions in the present campaign.

However, Louis van Gaal’s side have struggled in front of goal, which was evident from their lacklustre display against the Dutch team at Old Trafford.

And Owen, who turned out for the Red Devils between 2009 and 2012, feels a very limited contribution from the full-backs and the midfielders is the reason behind Manchester United’s woeful displays up front in the current campaign.

“They are set up to be a defensive team, they are set up not to concede any goals”, he said as a pundit on BT Sport.

“They should be having full-backs like we have seen for years and years that actually contribute going forward. They were brilliant defenders, but they also contributed going forward.

“At the minute none of their two midfielder contribute anything going forward, the full-backs are contributing nothing going forward.

“They are just a defending team with a few attackers with no help from elsewhere.”

Manchester United, who failed to find the back of the net for the sixth time this term last night, have scored 24 goals across three competitions in the ongoing campaign.

The Red Devils will look to return to winning ways when they take on Premier League leaders Leicester City in an away league game on Saturday.
