Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes feels the Red Devils are short of a cutting edge in the final third.

Manchester United earned their 12th clean sheet of the season last night against PSV Eindhoven, but it was also for the fifth time this term that they played out a 0-0 stalemate.

The draw could cost Louis van Gaal’s men a berth in the last 16 of the Champions League as they now need to beat Wolfsburg in Germany next month to assure themselves a place in the next round.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes has laid the blame squarely on Manchester United’s forwards and feels they are short of invention in the final third, which could unlock a tight defence.

The former England man also pointed out that there is no use in being good defensively if they can’t take advantage and score goals at the other end.

Scholes said on BT Sport: “There was a real lack of quality in the final third.

“You can defend as well as you want, but if you don’t have the forward players to create a bit of magic, then you are going to struggle.

“You have to win your home games.”

Van Gaal will look to find solutions to their goalscoring woes in the next few weeks, ahead of their trip to Wolfsburg next month.
